When you exit a hab it records what you are carrying. If you die, you respawn in that hab with what you had when you left it. Anything you picked up after you left will have been dropped where you died.

Seems more like fast travel than a punishment. In subnautica, we play as ryley robinson, who after crash landing on an alien planet, fights to survive in the face of overwhelming odds. After avoiding reaper leviathans, ghost leviathans and warpers, and helping to cure planet 4546b of the deadly kharaa bacterium, he finally leaves the planet.
What should have been a moment of relief quickly. You lose a few things. I'm seeing people say you lose everything (not saved to habitat or cyclops) except for one random item when you die, but i actually only lost 2 items when i died after grabbing like 20 things.
One of them is the saddest thing you could possibly lose. When you die you lose any resources you gathered if they were not saved. Your inventory is saved whenever you enter the lifepod, player made base, or cyclops.

It seems upon death the player always respawns in the life pod, however when in the cyclops a kind of moving base if you die you respawn in the life pod anyway. Leaving your submarine out in the ocean miles away and making the player do a long swim to retrieve it. Subnautica is terrifying, yet it’s not.
Now, what happens when you die in subnautica: Your character is now dead. The game will give you a little speech about your character’s passing and then start the game over again.
In subnautica, there are two ways to kill a character: By taking damage, or by getting too far away from land. A death by taking damage is pretty much instantaneous.
Three, easy to follow, steps that you can use to get yourself killed in subnautica. Example of what happens when you become unencumbered by common sense. When you die, you lose items that are not secured.
You will be warned otherwise with the message when entering a safe area (lifepod, base, etc. ). You die before entering a safe area. You lose that ore.
You enter a safe area. The fish pick at your corpse down to your skeleton and your bones become part of the coral.
