The corridor that opens, after you step on the two buttons at the same time, opens up after you beat the boss. Just go back and retrieve it. There are 3 different people you have to talk to throughout town.
Most of those people say a bunch of sentences. The questions asked at the beginning of the dungeon are just the beginning of one of the many sentences each person says (and the answer is the end).
