Updated feb 5, 2016. In addition to the main story missions and the huge playground that is the entire island of manhattan, lego marvel's avengers has seven smaller hub areas you can. Any flag on the globe is a hub area, and everything else are levels that are available to play/free play.
The helicarrier is in the manhattan hub area. You will have to try for it a second time if you do not collect it first.
